Hymns of the Twentieth Century Volume XII includes some of our most recently published hymns as well as hymn-writers ready to take up the challenge of the modern era - no doubt inspired by those who have come before them. In his Foreword to this volume, The Revd. Dr. Leslie Griffiths (now Lord Griffiths of Pembrey and Burry Port) speaks of the immeasurable impact of our hymnody: These wonderful hymns … became part of the DNA of eighteenth century Christians and their descendants. The most visceral understanding of the cross entered the very bloodstream of the believer. Hymns can clearly reach the parts that no other product of the human mind can get to. Certainly more deeply than even the most learned tome. Indeed, the output of hymns and their music has in no way diminished during the twentieth century and are as relevant today as they were three centuries ago. There is probably no finer medium that stirs the listener as much as hymn music in its immense variety and capacity for enjoyment. Thus, our chosen hymns are: Awake, awake to love and work - Darkness like a shroud covers the earth For the fruits of his creation - For the healing of the nations Give me oil in my lamp - God is here! As we his people God is love: let heaven adore him - Great is thy faithfulness I cannot tell why he, whom angels worship - I, the Lord of sea and sky Joyful, joyful, we adore thee - Judge eternal, throned in splendour Lord, for the years your love has kept and guided O Lord, my God! when I in awesome wonder O loving Lord, who art for ever seeking Of all the Spirit’s gifts to me - One more step along the world I go Sing a new song to the Lord - Spirit of God within me The kingdom of God is justice and joy Turn back, O man, forswear thy foolish ways Where cross the crowded ways of life - We have a gospel to proclaim and our hymn-writers are: Clifford Bax; Edward J. Burns; Sydney B. Carter; Thomas O. Chisholm; Timothy Dudley-Smith; William Y. Fullerton; Fred Pratt Green; Stuart K. Hine; Henry Scott Holland; William V. Jenkins; Fred Kaan; Graham Kendrick; Frank Mason North; Bryn Rees; Timothy Rees; Daniel L. Schutte; Geoffrey A. Studdert-Kennedy; Henry van Dyke The complimentary CD, which accompanies this volume, was recorded at St. Patrick’s Church, Patterdale in Cumbria by Tim Churchill of Sound Recording, Lancaster. For this final volume in the series, our grateful thanks go to Mike Town, recently retired from Eton College, for his much-admired organ accompaniment. |
