Hymns of the Great Composers Volume VII includes a special emphasis on the selected hymn tunes - the background and significance of their composers within the world of hymnody and beyond, together with the important part both they and the authors of the hymns have played, and continue to play, in the life of Church music. Our chosen composers are:

Johann Sebastian Bach; Ludwig van Beethoven; Jeremiah Clarke; Henry Walford Davies, Edward Elgar; George Frideric Handel; Franz Joseph Haydn; Gustav Holst; Felix Mendelssohn; Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart; Charles Hubert Hastings Parry; Henry Purcell; John Stainer, Arthur Sullivan; Ralph Vaughan Williams, Samuel Sebastian Wesley.

The hymn-writers in this volume range from Bianco da Siena who was born into the fourteenth century and several of our authors who helped to shape the early twentieth century. They include:

Sabine Baring-Gould; Edmond Budry; John Cosin; Henry Jackson van Dyke; Thomas Kelly; John Mason Neale; John Henry Newman; Martin Rinkart; Bianco da Siena; Cecil Spring-Rice; Samuel John Stone; Charles Wesley; John Greenleaf Whittier; Christopher Wordsworth

These are the hymns to which our composers’ tunes have been set:
Behold the servant of the Lord! - Blessèd city, heavenly Salem
Come down, O Love divine - Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire
Dear Lord and Father of mankind - God be in my head
Gracious Spirit, Holy Ghost - I vow to thee, my country
Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee - Love divine, all loves excelling
Now thank we all our God - Onward, Christians soldiers
Praise the Lord! Ye heavens, adore him
Praise to the holiest in the height - Rejoice, the Lord is King!
The Church’s one foundation
The head that once was crowned with thorns
Thine be the glory, risen, conquering Son

The complimentary CD which accompanies this volume is an organ recording of the chosen tunes, played by Mike Town (from Eton College, near Windsor) and recorded at St. Kentigern’s Church, Crosthwaite, Keswick in Cumbria.
